If you’ve been following my author journey, you’ll know that the gestational period for books is reeeeeeeeeeally long. I started writing my book back in 2021 and signed with my publishers in 2023. So if anyone is sitting there right now and thinking, Seriously? The thing still isn’t here yet? She’s been talking about this daughter book for eight million years—well, I don’t blame you.
The exciting news is that the book is actually almost here! For real!! Favo(u)rite Daughter, my debut novel about two half-sisters who meet for the first time as therapist and patient without knowing they’re related, will hit shelves on April 29th in Canada and the US and May 1st in the UK.
Which means it’s time to celebrate!
Join me for my book launch in YYC
I’ll be holding a launch event on May 13th at 7 pm at the amazing Shelf Life Books in Calgary. My friend Natalie Sue, whose debut I Hope This Finds You Well was one of my favourite books of last year, will be joining me to talk about the novel and all things writing life! You can read more about the event here and RSVP to the Facebook invite here (though RSVPs not necessary).
I have it on good authority there will be charcuterie AND dessert. YYC friends, I’d love to see you there!
More ways you can support
If you’re not in Calgary or not able to attend the launch, there are lots of other ways you can show your support. It can be hard to find traction in the market as a debut author, and these actions go a long way to helping the book find readers!
If you haven’t done so already, please consider pre-ordering Favo(u)rite Daughter. Pre-orders are important because they generate buzz for the book, making it easier for people to discover! You can place a pre-order online or in person at any bookstore, big or small. If you have an indie bookstore in your community, I suggest buying from them. In Canada, online pre-orders are currently on sale for $20 (~25% off!) at Indigo if you prefer!
You can also ask your local library to stock the book (or you can place a hold if they already have a copy on order). Most libraries have an online form where you can suggest a book for purchase.
Add the book on Goodreads (click ‘want to read’). This helps more people find it!
Sign up for the free online event I’m doing with the folks at FANE and hear me chat about the book alongside the very talented, very funny Lauren Bravo. Registrants will be able to watch the original broadcast on May 1 at 6:30 pm UK time (11:30 am MT/1:30 pm ET). You’ll also have access to the recording for two weeks if you want to watch it at a different time. (And go check out Lauren’s Substack,
, if you haven’t already!)Today is the last day to enter a giveaway I’m hosting over on Instagram with my fellow debut authors Rachel Phan, Iryn Tushabe, and Liann Zhang. Please share with all your bookish online friends.
For those who’ve already read the book—please leave an honest rating/review on Goodreads, social media, and/or retailer websites. (I love getting tagged in readers’ posts on Instagram!) And you can still request an advance reader copy (ARC) over on NetGalley.
If you know me IRL, you know that I generally dislike being the center of attention and I extra dislike asking for help. Thank you all for showing up for me! My heart is very full these days.
End notes
Currently reading: We Could Be Rats by Emily Austin, one of my auto-buy authors. I also recently finished Now is Not the Time to Panic by Kevin Wilson and an ARC of The Summers Between Us by Noreen Nanja, a dreamy second-chance romance that will be perfect for Carley Fortune fans.
On my desk this week: I just received a big edit letter from my agent for a new project, so I am putting my revision hat on and diving back into a manuscript I haven’t touched for almost a month! Wish me luck!
What have you all been reading? Let me know in the comments! And thanks as always for being here.
If you enjoyed this post, please consider forwarding it to a friend. I’ll be sending these letters a few times per month in the lead-up to my book’s publication. Find me at morgandick.com or on Instagram @morgandick_author for more.
So pumped for you, and for this book! I loved "I Hope This Finds You Well" and am preemptively jealous of anyone who gets to go to your Calgary launch with Natalie Sue!
Congratulations 🎉🍾🎈 How exciting and earned. Amazing!
