I saw Favourite Daughter up on Netgalley the other day and I totally didn't click it was your book! Very excited, congratulations!
I'm so glad the UK decided to go with the US cover. I think the commonwealth market is tired of the "planking girl" style cover (including facing back like this). It's been about four or five years since it started and markets are already reusing illustrations. I also think the UK market sometimes doesn't allow for more risk with illustrations - the covers for The Wedding People by Alison Espach are great examples of how the UK is underselling a title with such great potential by giving it a mediocre cover that doesn't convey a book as well. I think it's a heavy reliance on outdated trends that aren't so much the case anymore.
Anyway, waffling over! Congrats again and I've already marked FD as one to read, looking forward to seeing it out in the wild!
Such interesting points, Hannah!! I could talk about covers for hours. What do you think of the UK and North American covers for REALLY GOOD, ACTUALLY? I got into a heated debate with a friend the other day about which was superior. I tend to prefer UK covers for some reason but in this case I like the NA cover better.
Thank you for the well wishes and for supporting my book!!
A good cover can be really important, not just for advertising but to set the tone. The first time I approached Lauren Bravo's excellent 'Preloved', I tried it in completely the wrong mood, because we got the US edition, which had retitled it 'The Second Chance Store' and presented it as a quite different genre than it actually was.
So true! I had this reaction the first time I saw the original Canadian cover for Carley Fortune's EVERY SUMMER AFTER - I thought, nope, not for me. Then I saw the American cover and was totally intrigued! (I think they've since discontinued that Canadian cover).
Ah you must be sooo excited!?
Sooooooo excited!! And still a bit baffled lol. It is weird and wonderful to see the book starting to make its way to readers!! 🩷
